Often, auditors tackle diverse projects, work for different clients, report to different supervisors, so it’s essential to define what success looks like for each and collectively.

As your team’s coach, I will facilitate discussions to align the team’s focus and support them in defining collective success. 

Through regular check-ins, I will ensure everyone is on the same page, driving a collective effort.

Here, the team aligns its objectives with stakeholder needs, balancing assurance and advisory roles, multiple client / stakeholder demands and more.

As their coach, I will help the team clearly articulate their value proposition, one that all team members can agree on and rally behind.

By outlining their support and how others can engage with them, the team sets clear boundaries and builds trust.

Effective collaboration is crucial for audits.

As their coach, I will guide the team through models such as Tuckman’s stages of development (“forming, storming, norming, performing”) to help the team identify its current state and pinpoint areas for improvement. For instance, during the “storming” phase, auditors may have conflicting views on risk priorities.

This stage encourages open dialogue, fostering non-hierarchical collaboration and feedback which helps the team work seamlessly together.

I will also support the team to overcome challenges like a lack of accountability, promoting an environment where feedback is constructive and everyone is focused on results.

Audit teams often face an “us vs. them” mentality with other departments.

As their coach, I will guide them in using stakeholder mapping to identify key influencers and engage with those who might be skeptical of audits.

By stepping into the stakeholders’ shoes, the team shifts from being seen as “control inspectors” to strategic partners.

I will encourage regular retrospectives, where the team reflects on successes and setbacks to improve future performance.

For example, after completing an audit, the team might discuss what worked well, where challenges arose, and how to adapt their approach.
