Freedom: Beyond the Chains We See

As we celebrate India’s Independence Day, we honour the vision of a free nation; a dream fought for with courage, sacrifice, and hope. We have come a long way. Our economy is growing, opportunities are expanding, and our tricolour flies high with pride.

Yet, freedom is not only about breaking away from captors. True independence is the ability for every person to live with dignity, make personal choices without fear, and build a life free from the silent chains of burnout, constant pressure, and hopelessness.

It is the freedom to recover after life’s storms; whether that storm is the loss of a job, a sudden crisis, or the crossroads we never saw coming.

We must also ask:

• What is freedom when parts of our society remain trapped in poverty, when homelessness shadows our cities, and when communities still clash over identity?
• What is freedom when the dignity of the most vulnerable is negotiable? Even in something as everyday as the debate over Delhi’s stray dogs, we face the question of how we define care. Would true freedom be locking them away, or would it be seeking a kinder balance – training the most aggressive, and allowing the calmer ones to live among us, spayed, neutered, and free under the open sky that belongs to them too?
• What is freedom when our next generation measures their worth by the number of likes or comments they receive on social media?
• What is freedom when language becomes the barrier between talent and opportunity – when a bright, capable graduate who is not fluent in English is denied a fair start simply because they studied in a regional language, while corporate roles quietly demand fluent English?

True independence must mean equity in education, opportunity, and the dignity of a basic, decent living for all.

• What is freedom when our cities grind to a halt because of a few extra millimetres of rain?
• What is freedom when we spend hours in gridlock, unable to travel 10 kilometres in less than ninety minutes?

In a country so powerful, so capable, so uniquely intelligent, how do we still tolerate this paralysis?

• What is freedom when an increasing number of young adults take their own lives for fear of how to face the world?
• What is freedom when moral values and emotional resilience are not embedded in our education system from the earliest years? If we want our young to grow into grounded, compassionate citizens, then moral education and basic psychology should be as fundamental in our classrooms as mathematics or science.

We have come a long way. Ours is a country of immense possibility and remarkable talent. We have shown the world what we are capable of, and yet so many questions remain unanswered.

For a nation with such promise, real freedom will come when, each day, every voice, every home, every person takes a step toward solving the basic challenges that still hold us back.

Independence is a living promise. It asks us to extend the same spirit of liberty to every person and every part of our shared ecosystem.

As I walk my own journey of reset, I am reminded that freedom begins within when we release the fears, exhaustion, and self-doubt that keep us small, and when we choose compassion as the foundation for every action.

This Independence Day, ask yourself – what is one thing you can do to move us closer to a future where freedom is not just celebrated, but lived by every person and every being in our care?
