“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
– Stephen Covey, Viktor Frankl and many other brilliant philosophers
By the time we reach this stage in the Reset Journey, we’ve already done a lot of heavy lifting.
We’ve faced the truth of where we are (Awareness).
We’ve chosen a direction for our lives (Direction).
We’ve uncovered why it matters (Purpose).
We’ve even mustered the courage to take the first steps forward (Courage).
But courage alone doesn’t carry us all the way.
It opens the door, but to keep walking day after day requires steadiness. This is where State of Mind becomes essential.
Burnout, transitions, or big life shifts don’t just test your actions, they test your inner climate. A restless, anxious, or self-critical mind can sabotage even the bravest plans. A calm, grounded, self-directed mind, on the other hand, makes consistent action possible.
That’s why this Reset is placed here: it is the bridge between courage and sustained action.
Think of your state of mind as a quiet orchestra, always playing in the background. Some days the music is harmonious, other days it feels like the instruments are out of tune.
When stress builds, cortisol takes the conductor’s seat. The music turns frantic, your thoughts race, and clarity is drowned out by the pounding of urgency.
But when you find alignment, when your actions match your values, dopamine rises like a steady drumbeat. Suddenly, focus sharpens and motivation flows.
On calmer days, serotonin hums softly in the background. It steadies your mood, smoothing out the highs and lows so you can carry on with a quiet strength.
And when connection is present; a kind word, a hand on your shoulder, a reminder you’re not alone; oxytocin swells like a chorus, deepening trust and belonging.
Here’s the most important part: you are not a passive listener. You are also the composer. With awareness, you can notice which instruments are dominating the score. With practice, you can change the tune.
Every time you catch an unhelpful thought and gently redirect it, you’re reshaping the pathways of your brain. This is neuroplasticity at work; proof that state of mind is not fixed.
It is not just “how you feel.” It is a trainable skill. And when you learn to tune your orchestra, you create music that steadies you, inspires you, and carries you forward.
When it comes to building a resilient state of mind, I’ve found that it’s not one big practice, but a rhythm of anchors and micro shifts.
Macro practices – the anchors
These are the habits that create steadiness over weeks and months:
Micro practices – the dials
These are the small levers that shift my state in real time:
Individually, these practices may seem small. But together, they form a rhythm; anchors that steady you over time, and micro tools that remind you, moment by moment, that you are in charge of the dial.
State of mind is not about never wobbling. It’s about having a way back; both the bigger anchors and the smaller levers; to shift yourself from noise to clarity, from sabotage to self-command.
When I first measured my Positive Intelligence (PQ) score, I was shocked and disappointed. The score revealed how often my mind was being run by saboteurs; inner critics, restless thoughts, procrastination and the desire to please.
On the outside, I was functioning well. But on the inside, those thought patterns drained energy and eroded clarity.
Working with PQ practices was a turning point. The small reps; 10 seconds of shifting attention, catching and naming a saboteur, choosing a wiser response; seemed almost too simple at first. But they compounded.
Slowly, I began to experience greater calm, clarity, and a stronger ability to stay steady even when challenges hit.
That steadiness has been one of the most profound shifts in my own journey. It’s what makes courage sustainable. It’s what turns momentum into consistency.
Courage gets you moving. State of Mind keeps you steady.
Without it, fear and stress reclaim the wheel. With it, you discover a calm, resilient presence that lets you walk your path with clarity and strength.
Consistency is not about willpower. It’s about cultivating a state of mind that makes showing up feel natural, not forced.
Take a moment today to ask:
👉 This week, choose one micro practice a pause, a PQ rep, a self-command shift and commit to using it daily. Notice what changes when your mind becomes an ally, not an adversary.
Your reset begins the moment you choose awareness of your state.
